Stretch and Squash
The form of the object changes to denote force against that object. This is also used to emphasize speed and direction of motion. This strengthens and exaggerates expressions

Anticipation: Action, Reaction
Anticipation is subtle movement that occurs right before a major action. For example, an arm moving back before it is raised.

Straight-Ahead and Rhythm Animation
Straight-Ahead Animation (drawing each move from the beginning in a growth sequence) is used for action that involves rhythm in character movements. They are impossible to pose-plan. To do this, you can visualize the entire scene, draw projection poses at critical points (using them as guides but not final exact poses if they don't work) and then animate straight-ahead from the start into the projected poses.

Pose-Planning Animation
Pose-planning involves drawing defined poses where in-between drawings will be necessary to complete the animation. It is used when the gesture, drama, and attitude of poses are particularly significant to the animation.
