CALCULATING RESOLUTION FOR PRINT OUTPUT

  1. Create a new document. File>New
    1. Enter a target width and height, choose 72 dpi, choose RGB
  2. Choose image>image size
  3. Choose Auto from the dialog box
  4. Enter the screen frequency of your targeted output device (lpi of the printer)
  5. Click on the quality setting (best)
  6. Click ok.
  7. Write down the document size and resolution value. This is the value you will use to scan.
  8. Click cancel.

Notes:

If you are going to scale down your image that you scan in, multiply the resolution by that scale factor. Ex. Half the size, half the resolution needed. Double the size, double the resolution needed.

Printer line frequencies vary: 60, 65, 100, 133, 150. Check your printer or with your printer.

Ask your printer what dpi to use. Dpi for printers vary:

300, 600, 1270, 2540

As a general rule, your dpi should be two times your lpi value of the printer you will use. So, if your printer is 133 lpi, your resolution should be 266. Note that Photoshop will do this for you if you follow the steps above and use the Auto button in the Image Size area.
