SITE BUILDING

what to do?      http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/design

5. Next as you are sketching out your site, think about the hierarchy of your elements. Think about if you want your users to see everything without scrolling or if scrolling is o.k.

Most people read left to right, top to bottom (except if you are Japanese, lets say). But, most people look to the upper left hand corner first, which is why so many logos and headings are in that corner on a lot of sites:

http://www.apple.com
http://www.amazon.com
http://www.sony.com
http://www.cnn.com

But, not Yahoo, their logo is centered. Yahoo was the first online navigational guide to the Web created back in 1994. And it is probably one of the best sites in terms of information structure out there. You go there if you need information fast.

though I must admit, I go to Google first, minimalist that I am:

Supposably it helps to think of the first page as the front page of a newspaper, really important stuff goes on top, or "above the fold", as newspaper people say.
