Contrast Repitition Alignment Proximity

1. Set items off from eachother to make them easy to find.

2. Use different font: colors, sizes, font types, weights, etc. to highlight sections.

1. Be consistent.

2. Repeat icons you use or graphical elements

3. But, avoid redundancy, like obvious information or repeating link names.

1. Avoid centering

2. Aligned material is easier to find and read. Use aligment to separate sections. Especially in navigation and subnavigation areas.

1. Group related items together (especially in a navigation system).

2. When things are close to eachother we assume a relationship is there.

Rules to live by:

1. Navigation should be consistent and easy to learn.

2. The placement of certain standards should remain intact unless you have a good reason to break this. Ex. Logo on top (left); navigation on top (left nav or top of page); search boxes on top (right).

3. You site should answer the following within a few seconds of entering any page:

Where am I?

Where can I go?

How can I get there?

How can I get back to where I once was?

4. It must load fast. Within a few seconds.

5. Provide Feedback. Links should have states.

6. Labels for links must be clear.
